Sreemongol is an upozila of Moulovibazar district in the division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Sreemongol is located at 24.3083°N 91.7333°E. Its total area is 450.74 km². Sreemongol upozila is bounded by Moulovibazar sodor upozila on the north, Tripura state of India on the south, Komolgonj upozila on the east, Chunarughat and Bahubal upozilas on the west.
Administration Sreemongol thana, now an upozila, was established in 1912. The upozila consists of one municipality (pouroshova), 12 union porishods, 124 mouzas and 206 villages. Once Sreemongol was a part of Tripura state of India. The great earthquake of 1897 caused a massive change in the physiography of the area.
Sreemongol has a Muslim majority. The percentage of Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Buddhist population are 52.77%, 44.87%, 2.21% and 0.07% respectively. There are 164 mosques, 38 temples and one church in Sreemongol. There are some ethnic nationals in Sreemongol such as Garo, Sowtal, Khasia, Monipuri and Tripra.
A lot of local and foreign tourists visit Sreemangal to see its natural beauties every day. Several tourists have commented it as a heavenly place. There are many resorts and hotels in Sreemongal for the tourists. The notable ones is Lemon Garden Resort. There are some mentionable restaurants here, too. Some of them are Kutum Bari, Noor Foods, Modhumit Restaurant and Noakhali Restaurant. There are a few tea stalls that sell 5-7 layer-tea in one glass. Nilkontho is the pioneer of them.
Sreemongol is surrounded by forests and tea gardens. Lawachhora Rain Forest is the most famous among the forests. It is located 8 kilometers east of Sreemongol. The park offers ample trekking opportunities through the forest. Over 460 different species of birds, mammals and reptiles live in this forest. Mentionable animal species include deer, wild chicken, squirrel, python, endangered gibbons, capped langoor, slow loris, birds, snakes, banana spiders etc. The forest is really dense at some places like those of primeval ones.
